I took inspiration from the artwork of the movie Metropolis in which the protagonist creates a robot to replace his deceased wife. I used my own face to recreate the robot, and used the eyes as beams or spotlights to illuminate the many artificial images that AI can create. The piece shows how AI is trying to recreate human achievements such as the invention of the television and sky-scraping tower blocks, plus mother nature’s biology of flowers, and the perfection of the human hand, the subtlety and complexity of which robotics have proven difficult to recreate. Although these images could be mistaken as manmade, the human eye can detect something amiss. The images are too smooth, often include diminutive errors, and the effect is only apparent to a human subconscious. The first, quick glance at the image in its entirety could be seen as a vase holding the beauty of the natural world. This could be construed as how AI is attempting to recreate this beauty, but currently without total success. Only on longer, further inspection are the details of the picture revealed, thereby gaining the viewers interest, and giving them new items to discover over time with multiple viewings.
