The inaugural Technology in My Life citizens’ think-in on 15th November 2018 enabled members of the public to discuss and debate potential societal implications of one of the major emerging technologies worldwide: Artificial Intelligence (AI). ADAPT hosted the event at Wood Quay Venue, Dublin as part of Science Week 2018.
The think-in facilitated robust debate and provided greater insights into public opinions surrounding the privacy and civil liberties implications of AI.
Participants were asked to consider a series of scenarios relating to AI and discuss the various outcomes that can arise from these new technological advancements. By exploring the impact of these scenarios on the individual and society at large, public participants and ADAPT researchers uncovered some of the emerging risks and opportunities of AI and explored how research can ensure the age of AI is inclusive of everyone.
Evaluation of the think-in found that, post-think-in, 94% of public participants felt more informed about AI and 88% felt more comfortable expressing their views about AI.
The opinions and ideas gathered, and the conclusions arrived at, during the think-ins will help inform future ADAPT research and relevant public policy.
