Dublin, 2 April 2020: We are proud to announce the official launch of our first Digital Media Technology series: ADAPT Radio. The podcast highlights pioneering ADAPT AI research that is empowering individuals, business and society to get the most from Digital Media Technology.
Each episode of the first series focuses on one of our Centre’s key AI researchers, their career paths, motivations, research projects, and the importance of their work on society.
Our first series is split into three distinct themes that developed naturally as we spoke to our researchers. The themes are Personalisation – Connecting Humans to Digital Content, Machine Translation | Natural Language Processing, and Data Privacy and Ethics. Each theme is split into a separate playlist on our SoundCloud profile.
Personalisation – Connecting Humans to Digital Content
This theme includes episodes that deal with a variety of topics revolving around social media and search personalisation, including, data privacy, nomophobia, and push notifications. Kevin Koidl discusses ethics as they relate to user experience, especially with regard to social networks. Nolen Gertz speaks with Matt Cooper on “The Last Word” about social media and disinformation. Kieran Fraser details his project EmPushy that seeks to humanise push notifications with AI and user-inputted data. And Professor Owen Conlan talks about connecting humans to the right content in the right form at the right time through search personalisation.
Machine Translation | Natural Language Processing
The most popular theme to emerge from our initial podcast series deals with machine translation and NLP, especially among less well known languages. Our researchers discuss the difficulties encountered with human language processing done by AI and the implications their solutions could have on digital society. The researchers highlighted in these fields are: Professor Andy Way, Sébastien Le Maguer, Natalia Resende, Harshvardhan Pandit, Federico Gasperi, Eva Vanmassenhove, Dimitar Shterionov, Annalina Caputo, Ana Guerberof, Alberto Poncelas, and Abigail Walsh.
Data Privacy and Ethics
In this last playlist, our experts discuss issues related to data collection, Big Data, and privacy online. They also explore the ethical issues involved and how technology can evolve in conjunction with government guidelines to ensure our personal information is kept safe. Professor Dave Lewis goes into detail in three episodes on the trustworthiness of AI and the way companies handle our digital data. Kevin Koidl explores the ethics of AI and the impact on social media. And Harshvardhan Pandit looks into how privacy and data protection can be assisted with AI.
ADAPT Radio is available on SoundCloud, iTunes, Spotify, and Google Podcasts.
