Four winners from the ADAPT All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) are representing Ireland at the International Linguistics Olympiad held in Brazil from the 23rd to the 31st July.
Making up the team is Dáithí Butler of Coachford College Cork, AILO 2024 Champion, Paddy Clancy of St. Vincent’s Castleknock, Eliška Dvořáková of St Kilian’s Deutsche Schule and Patrick Chen of St Gerard’s School Bray. The team will compete against champions from 38 countries / territories in individual and team competitions.
The AILO finals see teenagers solve puzzles that require lateral thinking skills and the ability to think outside the box. Students must analyse the language data they are given to work out the ‘rules’ of the new language. These transferable skills are critical in preparing young people for a wide range of careers in computing, linguistics and language.
