Mr. Liu Shaowei, President of Huawei’s European Research Institute, recently visited ADAPT at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) to explore the latest research in generative artificial intelligence and telecommunications.
At the meeting, Professor John Kelleher, Director of the ADAPT Centre and TCD Professor of Computer Science, welcomed Mr. Liu Shaowei and other Huawei delegates, and led discussions on natural language processing (NLP) and generative AI, and their applications in telecommunications.
ADAPT’s research into Natural Language to SQL Translation (NL2SQL) and low code/no code solutions aims to improve user experiences and accessibility of database systems. Research in generative AI extends to various applications, including AI-driven email replies, expert recommender systems, and enhancing search experiences for users.
According to a recent industry survey, the adoption of generative AI in telecoms is expected to rise from 19% to 48% within the next two years. Key applications include customer care, IT and network optimisation, and AI-driven automation tools to enhance agility, accuracy, and efficiency.
Huawei and ADAPT have a longstanding partnership that has led to technological innovations that have received a number of prestigious awards. In 2018 the team won the ‘Outstanding Academic Achievement of the Year’ award at the 26th Technology Ireland awards, and in 2024 won the ‘Emerging Technology Innovation of the Year’ award at the Tech Excellence Awards. The collaboration between Huawei and ADAPT will continue to drive forward technological innovation and research excellence.
