A new research paper authored by Malick Ebiele, a PhD student at ADAPT Centre in University College Dublin (UCD), has been nominated for the Best Paper Award at the 16th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering, and Knowledge Management (KDIR 2024). This conference will take place from November 17–19, 2024, in Portugal.
The paper, titled “Personalization of Dataset Retrieval Results using a Data Valuation Method,” forms part of ADAPT’s industry collaboration with Tailte Éireann (formerly Ordnance Survey Ireland). Co-authored by Malick Ebiele, Dr. Malika Bendechache, Eamonn Clinton, and Dr. Rob Brennan, the research presents an innovative data valuation method designed to enhance the personalisation of dataset retrieval outcomes.
Focusing on Dataset Retrieval (DR), a branch of information retrieval systems, the paper explores how metadata and user preferences can be leveraged to improve the ranking and filtering of datasets by using data value calculations. The authors’ experiments, conducted with both real and simulated users, demonstrated that the proposed approach significantly boosts user satisfaction by increasing the chances of users finding their desired datasets within the top 5 or top 10 search results.
This nomination underscores the importance of ADAPT’s research in advancing knowledge engineering and highlights the value of our ongoing partnerships with industry stakeholders such as Tailte Éireann.
