ADAPT Launches ‘AI Literacy in the Classroom’ Programme to Equip Teachers for AI-Driven Future

14 October 2024

A new ‘AI Literacy in the Classroom’ programme aimed at supporting secondary school teachers across Ireland in improving their understanding of artificial intelligence was announced today.  Developed by the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology in collaboration with Google Ireland, the initiative will provide educators with the tools and knowledge needed to teach AI concepts and guide students in using AI technologies critically and responsibly.

The programme includes workshops and online resources, co-created with teachers to ensure the content is relevant and easy to apply in real-world settings. Aligned with Ireland’s AI education policies and supported by the Department of Education, ‘AI Literacy in the Classroom’ equips teachers with essential AI skills and insights to navigate the rapidly evolving technological landscape. The goal is to empower teachers to confidently integrate AI into their teaching and ensure students are prepared for a world increasingly shaped by AI technologies.

Professor John Kelleher, Director of ADAPT, said“Teachers are keen to bring AI into their classrooms, but many feel they need more support to do so confidently.  This programme is designed to give them the practical knowledge and skills they need to teach AI in a way that engages students while ensuring responsible use. By equipping teachers, we’re helping both them and their students thrive in an AI-driven world. This initiative reflects ADAPT’s focus on real-world applications of AI in education.”

Speaking at the launch, Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland, said“AI has the power to reshape our approach to society’s biggest issues, promising extraordinary breakthroughs that can improve billions of lives. Of course, any technological leap comes with risks but we know that AI will have a significant and long standing impact and the biggest risk is missing out. That’s why we want to equip Ireland’s young people and educators with the skills needed to understand and navigate this transformative technology. Our support for ADAPT underlines our commitment to making AI literacy accessible across Ireland, ensuring that students are prepared to shape an AI-enabled future that benefits all of society.”

ADAPT’s ‘AI Literacy in the Classroom’ is part of a broader mission to promote responsible AI use and to empower educators and students in navigating the digital age. With this initiative, ADAPT aims to equip the next generation with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
