ADAPT engages in Dublin Tech Summit 2024 with talks exploring the EU AI Act, AI in Healthcare, and Human-AI Evaluations

31 May 2024

Bringing together global leaders in innovation, technology and business, Dublin Tech Summit is a pivotal event for shaping future global trends. This year’s summit attracted over 8,000 attendees and featured more than 200 speakers from 60 countries.

Several ADAPT researchers were among this year’s distinguished speakers, marking a significant achievement for the centre. ADAPT speakers included Dr Marta Lasek-Markey (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Rob Brennan (University College Dublin) and Dr Benjamin Cowan (University College Dublin).

Dr Marta Lasek-Markey presented at the Tech Hive on the first day of the summit, evaluating the challenges of implementing fundamental rights impacts assessments (FRIAs) under the new EU AI Act. Her talk, “’Race against the Machine: Ensuring Compliance with Fundamental Rights in the EU AI Act”, was based on a paper that analysed the adequacy of FRIAs as a means of safeguarding human rights in high-risk systems. It also identified the limitations that need to be addressed for FRIAs to provide the expected protections under the Act.

Another featured ADAPT academic at the summit was Dr Benjamin Cowan. His talk, “Human-AI Evaluations: Techniques and approaches for designing and understanding the AI User Experience”, showcased methodologies, tactics, and assessment metrics commonly used in the field of human-computer interaction. He also shed light on interactions between humans and artificial intelligence technology.

Finally, Dr Rob Brennan joined the panel “Deploying of AI in Healthcare” where he and other leading experts and practitioners explored how AI technologies are being integrated into healthcare systems to improve patient outcomes, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and streamline operations. The panel discussed practical applications of AI, such as personalised medicine, AI-driven diagnostic tools, and predictive analytics in healthcare. They also addressed the challenges and ethical considerations of using AI in healthcare settings with consideration of diverse perspectives and what will be possible in the future.

In March 2024, ADAPT also participated in the mini-summit AI Tribes, powered by Dublin Tech Summit, where experts in cybersecurity, privacy, and artificial intelligence governance, along with founders of start-ups, convened to exchange insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
