Among ADAPT’s Innovating Women is Dr. Iona Gessinger, ADAPT Researcher and Phonetician at University College Dublin.
Dr. Gessinger is a skilled Phonetician interested in exploring how humans perceive and produce speech. In particular, how and why they adapt their speech to different interlocutors, for example, virtual agents. Currently, Dr. Gessinger is co-organising the Young Female Researchers in Speech Workshop (YFRSW) to encourage female students to pursue a career in the speech science and technology field. This workshop is a satellite to Interspeech 2023.
YFRSW is an event for female-identifying Bachelor’s and Master’s students working in speech science and technology. The workshop aims to promote an interest in research in this particular field among women who have not yet decided to pursue a PhD in speech science or technology, but who have already gained research experience at their universities through individual or group projects.
Regarding the Young Female Researchers in Speech Workshop, Dr. Gessinger said:
“I am happy to have earned my place in the speech science and technology community, and I am now delighted to encourage female students to pursue a career in this field by co-organising the workshop.”
