LegumeLegacy Researcher Highlights Biodiversity’s Role in Food Production at Trinity College Dublin

14 January 2025

Last December, ADAPT and LegumeLegacy researcher Die Hu presented at a Trinity College Dublin’s School of Computer Science and Statistics seminar, discussing the vital link between biodiversity and ecosystem functions in food production. Using three years of data from eight sites, the study explored how grass-legume mixtures could reduce nitrogen fertiliser use while maintaining biomass yields.

Hu emphasised advanced statistical methods for understanding multi-functionality—how multiple ecosystem functions interact—and demonstrated how biodiversity and management strategies can enhance sustainability and productivity. The presentation offered valuable insights into balancing agricultural needs with ecological sustainability.LegumeLegacy is an MSCA Doctoral Network and a highly interdisciplinary collaboration bringing together experts in statistics, ecology, agronomy, plant breeding and animal nutrition.
