Announcing the Successful Artists for 'The Bigger Picture' and Better Images of AI

11 November 2024
A collage featuring artworks from The Bigger Picture project. Central text reads 'The Bigger Picture' against a colorful background of overlapping squares. Surrounding this text are various digital and physical art pieces depicting abstract and futuristic interpretations of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Top left shows a human figure among geometric shapes and lines, representing connections; top right displays black-and-white patterns on tall buildings; bottom left includes two sculptures resembling small structures on stilts; bottom center and right use vivid colors and digital distortion effects, creating a modern, tech-inspired aesthetic. The images convey diverse, imaginative perspectives on AI.

We are delighted to announce the artists whose work has been selected for The Bigger Picture project, an initiative redefining how we see Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our daily lives. A call for submissions issued in September received a large number of submissions that inspired and challenged the current imagery associated with AI, offering fresh and nuanced perspectives on how AI integrates with society, creativity and human experience.

Exhibition Artists – Cork and Dublin

The following artists have been selected to showcase their work at The Bigger Picture exhibitions, which will be held in Cork and Dublin as part of Ireland’s Science Week. Each of their pieces brings a unique, thought-provoking take on the theme “AI is Everywhere”, highlighting AI’s influence in a wide range of fields, including the arts.

These exhibition pieces invite viewers to move beyond the typical representations of AI and experience it as a quiet yet powerful technology that’s woven into the fabric of modern life. We congratulate the selected artists.

Selected Images for the Better Images of AI Library

As part of the Call for Submissions, contributors had the opportunity to submit their work for inclusion in the Better Images of AI library under a Creative Commons 4.0 license. This library is a growing resource dedicated to creating more accurate and accessible visuals for AI, and we are delighted to announce that several of the submitted images were accepted. We wish to congratulate the artists whose selected works will join a repository of images that support education, media and public engagement with a more authentic portrayal of AI technology.

We would like to thank every artist who submitted their work and contributed to making The Bigger Picture a project rich in creativity and insight. Keep an eye out for updates about the exhibitions, explore these newly added visuals in the Better Images of AI Library and come to a panel discussion about the project this Science Week. Let’s continue the journey of re-imagining AI together!

About The Bigger Picture

“The Bigger Picture” is an Art-Science initiative designed to explore public perceptions and misconceptions about Artificial Intelligence (AI). With a series of workshops, critical analysis, artist submissions and two Science Week 2024 exhibitions, the project offers fresh perspectives and compelling visuals, inviting audiences to rethink AI. Not as a distant, sci-fi fantasy but as a meaningful part of contemporary life.

Through hands-on workshops, themes emerged that highlighted the presence of AI in all of our lives, the inherent human-ness of the technology and its complexity on different levels. Artists then responded to these themes in a call for submissions, bringing to life a diverse collection of images that reflect a more grounded and realistic view of AI today.
