Precision ALS, a pioneering academic, clinical, and industry research programme dedicated to advancing our understanding of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), recently convened a significant project meeting at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
Hosted by Professor Orla Hardiman, a vital figure in neurology and academic leader at Trinity College Dublin and ADAPT, the event provided an opportunity for the team to present their work on extant data, platform development, prospective data collection, patient journeys, and outcome measures. The meeting brought together leading experts in ALS research from both academia and industry to discuss how best to coordinate research on a pan-European and global scale.
Dr. Robert Ross from ADAPT at TU Dublin also presented on the use of data analytics and machine learning in the project. The following day, a detailed session on prediction modelling took place, where groups from five different research centres discussed their respective approaches to modelling, and how Precision ALS can assist them in their research.

Since the beginning of 2024, an additional two sites have joined the Precision ALS Consortium; University College London and ALS Clinic Lisbon. This means that the Precision ALS Consortium now comprises eleven research sites across nine European countries. With the upcoming addition of the University of Padua, Italy, as well as ongoing talks with other potential sites in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and Sweden, this number is set to grow over the coming months. This spells exciting times for Precision ALS and will only lead to more progress and innovation in the field of ALS research.
The meeting in Stockholm highlights the collaborative efforts and progress being made in ALS research. With ongoing support, Precision ALS is making significant strides in understanding and fighting this challenging disease.
