The All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) is a contest in which secondary school students develop their own strategies for solving problems in fascinating languages from around the globe.
The ADAPT All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) (https://ailo.adaptcentre.ie/) award ceremony was held on May 1, 2024, at Trinity College Dublin. During the event, ADAPT Director Professor John Kelleher announced the winners and engaged with students, their parents, and teachers.
The top four students from the individual round will go on to represent Ireland at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) in Brasilia, Brazil in July. Making up the team are AILO 2024 Champion Paddy Clancy of St. Vincent’s Castleknock who is returning to the international team for the second time, Eliška Dvořáková of St Kilian’s Deutsche Schule, Patrick Chen of St Gerard’s School Bray and Dáithí Butler of Coachford College Cork. Training sessions will kick off after school exams to prepare the students for the international competition.
The Junior winners were Maria McLoone in 4th place from St Columba’s Comprehensive school in Donegal, in 3rd place, Jacob Roantree of St Kilian’s Deutsche Schule, in 2nd place, Ben Maguire of Castleknock College; and finally, Junior AILO 2024 Champion, Vihaan Kulkarni of Methodist College Belfast.
The Team Award was won by Niall Morahan of Gonzaga College, Mai Tran of Our Lady’s Bower, Michael Costello of St.Kilian’s Deutsche Schule and Daniel Scally of Tullamore College.
