This year, six books have been shortlisted for the Michel Déon Prize for non-fiction, supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Among the selected titles is “Making Empire: Ireland, Imperialism, and the Early Modern World” by ADAPT Collaborator and Trinity College Dublin academic, Professor Jane Ohlmeyer.
The book, published by Oxford University Press, was launched by Minister Simon Harris in Trinity’s Old Library on Tuesday, November 21st 2023. Making Empire examines the unique position of early modern Ireland in the First English Empire, c. 1550–c. 1770s.
The nominations were made by the public and the publishing community through the RIA’s website. The judging panel then chose from the eligible titles based on criteria such as originality, quality of writing, and contribution to knowledge and public debate. The categories considered for the prize included autobiography, biography, cultural studies, history, literary studies, philosophy, and travel. The €10,000 prize, sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs, will be awarded to the winning author at a ceremony in October.
