The diverse world of academic research was laid bare at PROBE: Research Uncovered at Trinity College Dublin on September 30th last and the ADAPT Centre played its part in the free event hosted in partnership with Science Gallery Dublin.
ADAPT showcased a project that was completed in conjunction with Trinity College Dublin’s Library called ‘Geo-Library’. The web-based application allows users discover the geographical location of Harry Clarke’s stained glass masterpieces using information from the digital archives in Trinity with the geospatial dataset from Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi). Harry Clarke is considered Ireland’s greatest stained glass artist. The Trinity College Archives owns a rich collection of data about Harry Clarke’s works and these can be used in collaboration with other datasets to explore Semantic Web and develop interesting user interactive apps.
Visitors were able to analyse their digital footprint with new app, BigFoot, developed by ADAPT Centre researchers. The app allows users get a live view of how much personal information they’re leaking through social media. “Anonymity is becoming key amongst younger users so this app allows users understand they are putting out there online could be used in many different ways.”
The event allowed visitors take an up-close look at the fascinating research that is shaping our world, exploring solutions to society’s biggest problems, and learning about cutting-edge thinking through debates, interactive workshops, secret screenings and much more.
