Building on the success of its All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO), in 2022 ADAPT launched a free Transition Year (TY) module on Linguistics for secondary schools.
Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI) funded development of the module.
ADAPT’s Education and Public Engagement team and researchers at Dublin City University and University of Galway collaborated with AILO teachers to produce the 10-lesson teacher-led module and accompanying resource pack.
The module consists of 10 topics covering linguistics topics such as phonetics, writing systems and language acquisition. It uses relevant AILO puzzles so that students can get hands-on experience of linguistic problem-solving.
More than 100 teachers have completed teacher training workshops, and more than 3,500 students across Ireland have taken the lessons to date.
This module brings linguistics to the Irish secondary school curriculum for the first time, thereby enhancing the capacity for second-level education in linguistics and problem solving.
Every school / school year group on the island of Ireland (and further afield!) is welcome to use the materials how and where they can in their classes.
