A grant of €500,000 has been awarded to ADAPT affiliated researcher, Professor Bert Gordijn, under the Horizon 2020 initiative for a new project entitled “EnTIRE: Mapping Normative Frameworks for Ethics and Integrity of Research”. The consortium, which includes partners from Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Croatia, Spain, Germany, Norway, and the United States, will explore the increasingly important area of research ethics and integrity.
The aim of the EnTIRE project is to create a platform that makes normative framework governing for Research Ethics and Research Integrity (RE+RI) easily accessible, supports application in research and evaluation, and involves all stakeholders in a participatory way, thus achieving sustainability.
The area of Research Ethics and Integrity is fast evolving. In the EU and internationally, new legislation, codes and good practices are constantly being developed. In this complex environment, researchers cannot easily identify and be aware of the rules to be followed. This also constitutes a challenge for the ethics/integrity experts. At the ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology, researchers believe ethical and privacy issues need to be to the forefront during technology development and the Centre brings together researchers from across disciplines (Computer Science, Law, Ethics, Sociology etc.) both within ADAPT and beyond to progress the state-of-art and practice in Ethics and Privacy. An “Ethics of ADAPT” white paper, co-written by Professor Bert Gordijn, has been published which aims to provide an early concise overview of the ethical challenges that can be identified in the research being undertaken at the ADAPT Centre.
The EnTIRE platform will foster uptake of ethical standards and responsible conduct of research, and ultimately support research excellence and strengthen society’s confidence in research and its findings. The proposed action will facilitate the work of the researchers to comply with research integrity and ethics standards and legislation while improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the research ethics/ integrity committees and competent national bodies. Consequently, the excellence of public and private research in the European Research Area will be promoted.
