Dr. Teresa Lynn and Jane Dunne from the ADAPT Centre attended the first 6-month face-to-face partner meeting for the European Language Resource Infrastructure (ELRI) project on the 7th and 8th of June in Lisbon, Portugal. ELRI is a 2-year project funded under the European Commission’s CEF Telecom Programme, which started in October 2017.
The primary objective of ELRI is the provision of an infrastructure (called a National Relay Station) to help collect, prepare and share language resources with the ultimate aim to improve translation technology for public administration across Europe. The following four member states will first assess the feasibility of these National Relay Stations: France, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. As part of this project, the particular focus of the ADAPT Centre’s work is the improvement of machine translation for the Irish language.
ADAPT representatives based in DCU participated in the Lisbon meeting in addition to staff from the six consortium partners: Agência para a Modernização Administrativa (AMA), Linkare and the Faculty of Science from University of Lisbon from Portugal; Evaluation and Language Resources Distribution Agency (ELDA) from France; and Secretaria de Estado para la Sociedad de la Información y la Agenda Digital (SESIAD) and the Programme Coordinator, Vicomtech from Spain.
The meeting included sessions detailing progress to date, lessons learned from the first six months and future planning for the coming six months to ensure successful completion by the end of September 2019. The project is progressing well with the National Relay Stations expected to be in place by October 2018. The next face-to-face meeting and a Stakeholders Conference (with representatives from public administrations expected to use the National Relay Stations) is scheduled to take place in Paris towards the end of this year.
